my son desperately wants a rooster with my 3 hens. We are in Brooklyn NY, as urban as can be.

Is it possible to remove the vocal chords by a vet? Is this humane? Will it make the hens not want the rooster?

Thoughts?

I am very new to chickens. Only in the learning stage. I can't answer your question about cord removal. However they do have a rooster collar, No Crow Rooster Collar, that keeps the roosters crowing quieter then normal. That might work for you.

I have no idea if a vet can remove vocal chords. I doubt they would anyway. No crow collars aren’t good either. Honestly it’s probably not the best idea to get a rooster if your in the city. I bet your son just likes roosters. If you take the crowing away it’s not the same.
Maybe you can take him somewhere out of the city to a farm where he can interact with roosters every now and then.

Here's a good opportunity for a lesson in the 'we can't always have what we want' realm.
Noise is only one of the problems male birds can cause.
You're new to chickens, and only have 3 females, best not to have male in your flock.

My niece got a no crow collar and it does work. He still crows but not very loud.
Quite a few roosters have died because of those collars. They end up choking on food. I understand the want to keep a rooster but not to the point where you have to change his natural behavior. I can’t imagine it’s very comfortable for the bird either.

My roster is broken then, he doesn't crow

I'd rather try a collar then what most people recommend. Having to rehome or cull.
