About two and a half weeks ago, I brought home two, ~4 month old Salmon Faverolle pullets (Frances and Harriet the 2nds).
I had previously posted about a different Fav pullet of the same age (Frances #1), which I got from the same local breeder but who started displaying sneezing, runny nose, and lethargy soon after I brought her home. When I got her, I also got an easter egger pullet (Harriet #1), who never came down with any symptoms of disease. Anyway, after about 4 days of monitoring these two pullets, I spoke with the woman (I will call her the Chicken Lady) who I got them from. She assured me that none of her hens were displaying respiratory symptoms (even sent multiple videos) and offered to take these ladies back and swap them out. I also know many people who have gotten chickens from the Chicken Lady and she has a very good reputation for raising and selling healthy chickens. I was nervous about these new pullets getting my existing three hens ill (though I do have them separated by a fence and sleeping in separate coops), so I took Chicken Lady up on her offer to switch out the pullets. I knew she would be able to take good care of them! Chicken Lady updated me on Frances #1, saying she got better after several days without use of antibiotics (and Harriet #1 continued to never get sick).
Once I got new salmons, I was initially very relieved because they seemed extremely perky, no signs of any disease. Also they are EXTREMELY CUTE. However, about 2-3 days later I began to hear sneezing and noticed food/dirt/etc building up around their nostrils (which also had a slight stink to them). But no lethargy - both very active, running around, dustbathing and eating/drinking normally. I gave it about a week, rubbing VetRx on their beaks and under their wings, putting grapefruit seed extract in their water, but no change in their symptoms, so 5 days ago I started a broad spectrum antibiotic (Amoxicillin + Tylosin + Bromhexine) recommended by the Chicken Lady and another local feed store that goes into their water daily. By the second or third day of that, their nose smell and buildup completely went away! BUT, today (day 5, near the end) they are still sneezing! And again, still acting very normal besides the sneezing. So my question(s) are, should I continue the abx longer? Is it possible that this sneezing is related to allergies that will eventually go away? Any advice is much appreciated and thanks for reading this sneezing salmon saga!
Including video of them getting some black soldier fly larvae.
