Good friends and good folks seem hard to come by these days! We have thwarted the mooch machines and stuck with the good ones. It is mutual with all of our friends. I'd bend over backwards and give them the shirt off my back...literally, and they'd do the same for me and have before. Some hard times takes more than just family to get through and we all NEED good friends surrounding us. I love my friends like family and most have a key to my house and some to my car even. Other people.....well they can just step off if all they want is to use us. I totally agree that a lot of people are just out for number one, and it's such an ugly charachter flaw!!

Actually there may be something going on that you have not considered: many, many people in this country have never actually killed their own food, let alone butchered it. Some folks just don't have the stomach for it. It's why folks will turn up their noses at homegrown and pay for the stuff at the store. There are quite a few squeamish types who would become vegetarian before they'd kill/butcher that steak!

And then again, some folks just have their hand out for whatever they can grab, whether they need it or not. Brassy. I don't give to people who have their hand out. I look for folks too proud/polite to ask. Just my own personal hangup, I suppose, but I cannot stand nervy, brassy people.

it is funny you posted that. I took three younger people hunting this past season and I kid you not...when we got to the woods they did not even have ammo!!! I had to provide them with the ammo and even loaned a rifle to one guy. It totally took me by surprize.

I agree with you 100% and we do give our former neighbors (a mother and her daughter) who are unable to hunt and would have no clue how to butcher a deer but I have an issue with a perfectly healthy man asking when he makes fun of me and my dh for hunting and fishing. My two-cents is if you are too sensitive to learn to hunt ansd fish then perhaps I am to sensitive to give away my food.

I don't have any advice. I know that I would never ask for anything without offering to pay for it. We are good friends with a couple who enjoy hunting together and frequently give us venison hamburger, sausage and his home made jerky (we never ask, they just bring it over). They would never take any money so we pick up some dinner tabs and we bought them a new dehydrater for Christmas last year for his jerky.
I guess for the people that are asking just say sorry, you don't have any until they finally get it or for eggs say sure! I'd be happy to bring you some. They are x$ a dozen to cover feed costs.
Some people just really can't take a hint!

Wouldn't it be great if everyone just bartered what they have? I'd love some of your wonderful deer meat since I don't hunt, but I do spin and dye and knit and this wide and wonderfully soft hand-painted baby alpaca scarf is for YOU! (would you like to do some trading?)
