Sadly, but not unexpected, Fanny has died. The last of my 3 original Golden Girls. She was old, and had enjoyed lots of sunshiney days. She no longer laid eggs, but was nonetheless a very special hen, and forever member of the Blessed and Highly Favored Flock of Whisper Hill.

That’s her, a few days ago, on my front porch. They came calling for seeds, lol. (The golden chicken front and center, with her friends, Sundae, and Big Tex.)

The rooster, Harry, that was raised with her, a bantam Cochin cross (rear left in the pic) stayed by her side until we removed her for disposal.

Some of my most treasured friends are chickens. Fanny was one of them.

So sorry, it's always hard to lose them. Nice picture, thank you for sharing it. :hugs

I know this is sad but it’s actually very nice! I hope all my chickens die from old age. Sounds like she had a great life!
R.I.P Fanny
Yes, agree absolutely! Fanny had a very wonderful six years, living a life of community, plentiful food, and the free roam of about 12 acres, under the watchful protection of the careful eye of 3 roosters and 3 protector dogs. She had a heater when it was cold. And a fan when it was hot. Loads of fresh treats, of which she especially loved watermelon. She had just enough trouble to make life interesting. And she knew I would tuck her in every night and tell her to say her prayers. She had just about as good a life as a chicken can have, and then fell asleep for the last time. Thanks for helping me focus on the good. 💜
