Don't beat yourself up about neutering him early. There are far too many dogs without homes or people that want them. Early spaying and neutering prevents more unwanted animals. I have always gotten mine done by 6 months. I haven't seen any problems from it. I think what's worse is immature animals producing litters that weren't planned.

Everyone has an opinion on the subject. I just remember not too long ago before regular spaying and neutering became the norm. Lots of dogs put down, lots of dogs running free. So it's not always a simple answer. I lost intact dogs to reproductive cancers. I personally would prefer not to ever experience that again.

That’s a very good point. I think it is definitely a complex issue for sure and everyone has an opinion but I don’t think anyone really knows for sure. For me personally I think I will wait just to be cautious/on the safe side and if I choose a breeder that requires it, I won’t really have a choice anyway, and you know I would manage the dog properly and never allow roaming or unwanted litters, but I do think for the average person, fixing their dogs is a good idea. And I don’t think 6 months is too early for most dogs, I know plenty that are perfectly fine, but I do think that spaying and neutering before 6 months is a problem. Like I don’t think neutering little tiny puppies is right. And I think early spay and neuter causes more problems for males than it does for females but I’m not sure.
 
We neutered our last hound dog before he started lifting his leg. He never did and continued to pee like a girl, which made me very happy because the last one kept killing my plants with all his leg lifting. There are good things about neutering earlier.

Generally the shelters that do early altering feel they have no choice but to try to control the situation. I'm sure a fair amount of adopters don't follow through as they should.

You of course are very responsible with your dogs, so I know you would be careful.

Really? That’s so interesting! I can’t remember if Gator was lifting his leg or not, for a while he wasn’t, but he did learn lol then as he got older he just stood with his back legs out like a race horse to pee lol still lifted to mark on trees and such, even yesterday, but at home he would just go on the grass and stand there lol

And yeah, I totally see why they do it, they don’t want people breeding more unwanted dogs, but I just think that puppies need the hormones until at least 6 months preferably older so I wish they didn’t but most dogs won’t have issues. Although some countries don’t even neuter, at least not in the numbers we do here, and they don’t have a huge overpopulation issue I don’t think but idk. But I can see why they do it, the average owner can’t or won’t contain their dogs.

Thank you, I definitely would be and even if I did fix early, planning on being on leash, in fenced yard, and/or supervised all the time when outside anyway. Except maybe hikes. Although tbh I think I would prefer a male just because heats are such a huge pain in the rear lol we went through so many heats with the cat and she was obnoxious lol

His name is Bingo, he has been with us his whole life. I have his Pyrenees mother as well. He was from an "oops" breeding, the litter was not intentional. He's a good boy but not the brightest bulb in the box, lol
