Don't beat yourself up about neutering him early. There are far too many dogs without homes or people that want them. Early spaying and neutering prevents more unwanted animals. I have always gotten mine done by 6 months. I haven't seen any problems from it. I think what's worse is immature animals producing litters that weren't planned.
Everyone has an opinion on the subject. I just remember not too long ago before regular spaying and neutering became the norm. Lots of dogs put down, lots of dogs running free. So it's not always a simple answer. I lost intact dogs to reproductive cancers. I personally would prefer not to ever experience that again.
