Hi, my name is La Tonya. My husband and I are looking to build a chicken coop and run for our new chickens. Now, granted I might be ahead of the game as we don't have chickens yet....but I want to be prepared if possible...

This is something very new for us so we will need all the suggestions and help we can get. I know this is a trial and error but we are so excited....and nervous at the same time.

Hi :welcome La Tonya

Glad you could join the flock! The learning centre has lots of great articles that would really help you get started on your chicken adventures. Here is the link ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center
I'm sure you will enjoy your new hobby very much, keeping chickens is both great fun and very rewarding. Be sure to ask any questions, everyone here to help and very friendly.

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC :frow

Welcome to BYC, La Tonya. Glad you decided to join our flock. X2 on Yorkshire coop; if you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center. There is lots of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Hi La Tonya,

Check out the coops tab for some great ideas you might want to incorporate into your coop:

If you have questions about your coop and/or run, you can ask them here:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/9/coop-run-design-construction-maintenance

A couple important things to keep in mind...make it as predator-proof as possible (no one wants to experience the loss of their flock) and make it as big as possible (big enough for you to move around in it, big enough the chickens don't feel crowded and big enough you can add more birds at some point).

It's nice to have you here!

Stay Calm Backyard chickens is here. It's a good idea to have the coop/ run or brooder ready BEFORE getting any birds. Much less stressful than getting chicks/birds and not knowing where to put them or what to do. "Raising Backyard Chickens," forum is another good place to read up. Welcome to BYC
