A twist on the ugly duckling story.

maybe with the one that her eggs keep going bad slip her some babies under her at night she would probly be happier with jsut one or two or as many as you want maybe she isnt turnign her eggs or maybe they arnt fertile idk just a sugjestion

Yes, that's what I did with my last broody. She was the Araucana sister to this one and she had too many eggs under her so I took some away and put them in bator. She hatched some herself and I slipped her the additional chicks at night as they hatched in my bator. They went right under her wing and she raised all 5 herself, the two she hatched and three I hatched.

But I tried that with this other broody and she growled at the chicks and struck at them so I took them away. I don't know if it was because it was daylight, I did switch the other ones at night, or because her eggs had not started hatching yet.

Hopefully she will hatch something out of these Marans eggs I've given her. An expensive gift that I hope she appreciates.

So cute. Can't wait to hear/see more.

A couple of weeks ago I read a library book to my little one called "the duckling and the chick" about two little best friends. One could swim and the other one couldn't. But they loved catching worms and digging together. A sweet book.

Have fun! I would love to have some little babies under a broody, but alas, no roosters allowed in the city.

That picture is priceless... can't wait to see how momma and duckling do together.

More pictures as soon as you can get them please.

Please let us know how she does.
That is just too cute.

I had two Buff Orps hatch some mallards eggs, but they almost killed them as they were hatching.

Reminds me of a story in my 1st grader's reading book about a boy who had a pet chicken who desperately wanted to hatch eggs. The boy found a clutch of abandoned eggs in the park, next to the pond, and gave them to his hen to hatch. She hatched out ducklings, and when they all started swimming, the poor mama hen completely panicked. I'll have to find the title of the story, you'd enjoy it now with your duckling chick!

Congrats, how darling. Can't wait to hear updates.

Edit: The story is called "The Surprise Family," by Lynn Reiser.

Well mama duckhen is doing just great with her two duckie babies. She is so overprotective though. I have them separated in a pen inside the duck house. The ducks all surround the pen and stay in there like they know it's their babies in there. And you should have seen me trying to get that mama hen in that pen. She was coming at me like Kung Fu Ninga Warrior. Now every time I walk in there or lift the lid, she starts doing this crazy chicken dance and squawking and the two little duckies run under her and she hides them. I mean she's crazy about it.

It's hard to get a pic because she starts the crazy mama dance as soon as I open the door to the duck house - but here they are:

First you see them:

Now you don't:

I remember reading something once about a broody hen hatching a few ducklings. The ducklings would find water and jump in-taking a swim and playing about. Mama broody would cackle and scream for her babies to come back and they would just ignore her.
