Hello, I’m somewhat new to having chickens and today I encountered my silkie hen being obnoxiously loud... she laid her first egg earlier today and I don’t have any roosters so what is she trying to say? She is by the sand box where where my older hen takes dust baths, is she just checking it out? She doesn’t have mites or anything bothering her. I don’t know if this info is relevant but just trying to supply as much as possible. She basically sound like a rooster. I would upload a video but it says I don’t have an “allowed extension.”

You have to post your video to YouTube or another video format then paste the link to it here. I'd like to hear her before commented.

She is saying "what are these feelings, what is that thing that came out of my butt...what are these Feelings, Feelings, Feelings". :gig

Newly laying pullets are often very vocal....can go on all day long.
Hormone surges.

I had one group a few years ago that were so loud I had to close the house windows so I could work on the phone.

New layers can be quite goofy acting, they don't know what they are doing at first and can be confused and anxious, it can take up to a month or so before they get it all figured out. Putting some fake eggs or golf balls in the nest might help show them where to lay. They may scratch around in the nests for weeks before laying, spreading the bedding everywhere. They will scratch around a bit less in nest as they get used to the routine. Meanwhile, eggs everywhere, some of them can be rather funky looking, soft or thin shelled, huge double yolked eggs.

When my hens first laid their eggs they were ridiculously loud, it's a massive celebration, the others were loud too. They were unbelievably excited. I have an amazing book called How to speak chicken which explains all this but I think maybe she was celebrating her outstanding achievement. Having just read the above post maybe they were also unbelievably confused!

I've got a few that are super loud this year too... I think they're just rejoicing their united 'womanhood' & girl power! Imagine laying all those eggs each week! Definitely hormones, and maybe a bit of an adrenaline rush too. My 12 hens start up a cacophony of joyful song each morning... but usually wrap it up by 11 AM or so. I go out and clean the coop during their choral rehearsal... and they usually quiet down. :) I think it's sweet... I just hope my neighbors agree.... a few of the girls actually register on my outdoor cameras as "dog barking"... hahah I've gotten to the point where I can tell who's voice is who... hahah... it's pretty funny.
