I am so sorry about your loss. I do have a suggestion for covering your run. We have ours covered with bird netting. It has held up good for us and you can hardly see it from a distance, but it will definately keep anything from flying in and getting your babies.

So sorry for your loss. It's hard to try to protect them for everything but we sure do work hard at it, don't we. Because we have hawks DH made a frame out of old fencing pipe, then he covered it with deer netting (pretty cheap at Home Depot). He painted the frame the same color as the barn and from a distance you can't even see it. Because our barn has a slate roof and the snow and ice barrels down it we needed something that could be easily removed in the winter.

That's a real bummer. I've lost several hens in the past due to Hawks. Then I strung fishing line back and forth across the top of their run and that stopped the hawks from dive bombing my hens. The line doesn't have to be very close or thick. Hawks can see anything and won't chance flying into an area where they can't fully extend their wings. Haven't lost one since my line was put up.

I am so sorry for your loss.
I'm insane about using everything, so I figured this one out: I punch four holes into every food can lid I open, from beans to corn to spaghetti sauce. I then use fishing line from old reels to tie them together. You only need a can lid every 6 feet or so, it seems the reflction off the lid throws the hawks off. I'm lucky, I have trees I can hang my "hawk net" off of. If you don't want to spend the money on good bird netting, this might work for you. If you don't have trees, maybe a tall pole?
