Well, today we found one of our hens dead in the coop. It was such a shock and so sad as well. After reading a bit on here(trying to figure where to put this thread), I suspect she was egg-bound perhaps and I just never knew it. I say this because one of the hens had been putting its tail down(I suspect it was the dead one we found today), but sometimes it would be up. However, yesterday it didn't put its tail up very much and I thought maybe it was just cold(not knowing a chicken could get 'bound' and the symptoms). She had bright eyes and was alert and as active a the chickens normally are. The coop is cleaned completely every week, they have good feed that is dry, they have fresh clean water daily, there really were no other symptoms of any illness. In any case, we are now down to 4, and the flock just doesn't seem complete any more. I'm really very sad about it. But I do also understand that these things do happen, and will happen no doubt again. But I hope it won't happen again for a long long time!!!

Thanks for letting me share a sad moment in my journey of living with chickens.

Sorry for your loss Sequin. Lots of us here know how it is to walk out and find a fatality - always so sad, and especially with a very small flock. Best wishes to you and the rest of your girls.

I'm sorry, it's funny how these feather heads get under our skin isn't it? I was thinking this afternoon after I got home how much I would miss my hen fuzzy butt. When I come home she sits on the fence of the coop and gives me a chicken kiss,, I like to think she loves me and it's just interested in the treats or my earrings! You couldn't have know, don't be hard on yourself.

We am very sorry for your loss. It's really hard, its happened to us several times. At this time, we have 1 rooster and 2 hens left. We did get 6 chicks (they'll be 4 week old on Valentines Day) that are keeping us laughing and in about 10 weeks or so will try to introduce them to Herman, Mama and Hawk. Take care.
