A video diary of my emu chicks

The birds are nearing a year old now. I lost Mormor (as seen above) to a genetic deformity that was present at birth. My two Emu and other Ostrich are doing well. It's become apparent to me at this time that my Ostrich much be a male. You can see some of his territorial behavior in this video. This literally happened within about a week to ten days. Before that he showed almost no signs of any 'aggressive' or dominate behavior. He's a pretty impressive bird and if he is a male as I suspect, he should be even more gorgeous once his feathers finish coming in darker and he continues to mature and grow. Right now he is just about 7 feet tall.

Just had to say I LOVE all your emu and ostrich vids! They kept me sane waiting for MY emu chicks too hatch lol. It's so painful that it takes like 50 days : /
I am very sad to hear about Mormor, but glad that the rest of the "big birds" are doing well.
So now I'm waiting for my emu to grow up...it's taking awhile lol. Can't wait until there the size of the ones you have. Mine are about 1 1/2 months old so, I have a ways to go.
Keep posting vids of your animals, there awesome!

Isn't it forever?

Now I'm waiting for my Emu to mature. They still look like babies... so you definitely have a long way to go.

I'm thinking about hatching some Rhea eggs. At least the incubation time is shorter!

Glad you like the videos. I was happy to have gotten the Emu's hatching. After all that waiting time, I really wanted to be there.

I chose to love them at every stage. As chicks, they're Super Cute. By about six months, they have passed to fluffy-pin-feather phase, and started developing personalities. They are delightful at this stage.

Then they hit the I-am-an-exclamation-mark stage. You can worry less about their health. If you are as fortunate as I was, you could start actually taking them walking through the Australian bush. They are delightful at this stage.

Then they reach the black-head phase, fast and sassy. They are delightful at this stage.

Then they are adults whom you have known all your life -- like Felicity, who is now 6-feet high but used to hide under the branches of the fig tree when her dad chased her. Knowing that she has years of trust in you is a fine feeling. They are delightful at this stage.

Wow, how long have you had emu? I'm a newbie lol. But I have to say I LOVE their fluffy striped stage, but sort of wonder what they will look like at 16 months. But I do love how they are always changing. One of my emu is just starting to turn black. Here is a pic when he just hatched.

You probably have already stated it in one of your vids, but how old are you emus now? And rhea? Now that would be cool! Yeah, ostrich and rheas have shorter incubations then emu. I love the white rhea with the blue eyes! A word of warning. (you probably already know this) I have herd that adult male rhea can be very nasty and aggressive, so it's usually best to just keep the girls. In my eyes Rheas might be one of the most stunning ratites..then again ostrich are amazing...and so are cassowary....oh forget it, they're all awesome!! Lol.

I believe they were hatched mid-June 2013, so they're approaching one year old. In my latest video, which was filmed the other week, they would be about 10 months, then.

If I get rheas, it'll probably end up being through eggs and just hope they hatch and live- which is always asking a lot, especially if the eggs are mailed. So I'll probably take whatever I can get. Finding chicks locally or adults would be nearly impossible where I'm at. I think my emu are a pair. The male is very indifferent to things and the female is more friendly and curious and I guess you could also say 'aggressive' in that way. But unless I do a DNA test, I don't think I'm going to know for sure for a long time. That was just my gut instinct from when they were only a few days old.
