A Walk On the Cemani Side

Well I got my eggs on Wednesday! Sadly I've been really sick the past few days so I haven't been able to really do much. I took pics of the whole unboxing. She did a really good job with the packaging. I'm taking notes from this one!

So much bubble wrap! I'm impressed.

I really like how she wrapped the eggs. These little rubber bands are so much easier than the ones I've gotten packaging tape around them. I'll have to steal this idea lol

All 12 eggs are nice and perfect. I love it when there are still pieces of the bedding on the eggs.


I let them sit overnight and put them on the incubator Thursday evening. So far the temp has being staying pretty constant. I'll try candling them at 10 days to see what I got. I have no problem hatching quail, but chickens have been a bit of an issue. I hope I can at least get a few to hatch

In adding to this instead of making a new post because it is just a small update. I just checked the eggs (12 with 4 extras because Cjwaldon is awesome!) on the incubator and got antsy and decided to try candling (I forgot to before setting them because I'm still really new at this) from what I saw, 2 might be empty, a LOT of nice and dark yolks, and 1 showing veins already! I was trying to hold off for day 10 since I really don't know what to look for, but I'm pleased with them so far.

They are growing up nicely. Sadly now that they are in a bigger coop, it is getting harder to snag them for individual photo sessions. They are still quite friendly and like to come say high and perch on my hands whenever I feed.

This is the darkest out of all of them, and of course this is the one with 2 white toes. I'm pretty certain this one is a pullet. I'll have to see how everyone matures, but I'm willing to try her for breeding with a roo with all black feet. I'm still learning which are better to keep.

They like to jump up on their feeder or the white shelf I have in front to prevent them from running out like they used to. This is the sass I get for taking pictures instead of feeding them.

I think this is one of the might be two males. They love getting on top of the ramp and flying down.

Here is their "mama" making sure I know she has had enough of these pictures before breakfast.

And of course their big bad guardian Titus always watching over them. At least this morning he was blowing me kisses instead of telling me no.

Well today is day 9 on the eggs. I was too impatient to wait for day 10 >>

Final count out of 16 eggs is 8 confirmed chicks, 5 empties, and 3 I'm not sure of. I'm getting excited!

Well I don't have any more pictures of my chicks (I know I know I need some)especially considering I think I have a majority of males... I'll have to get some nice ones to see if anyone can tell for me. They ate all really sweet though. When I feed they like to roost on the shelf I have keeping them in or they jump on me and hang out on my arms or hands. I just took my eggs off of the rocker for lock down. So far the total is 7 confirmed chicks! Here's hoping they all hatch!

Well it's been a while since I posted pictures. Sadly I was only able to get 1 chick to hatch, the other 6 quit in lock down :/

Well I moved the bigger chicks out to an old turkey pen that's been empty. They seem quite pleased with the change since they were getting too big for their little hutch, but it's been oddly cold this week so I've been worried about moving them out to the real world.

This is my poor, lone female. So far I think she is the darkest skin wise, but she has 2 white toe nails, which honestly I think I'm OK with for now. Her skin is nice and dark to make up for it.

Here are a few of the males, and I'm pretty sure they are lightening up more and more as they age. I'm glad I've got 4 to choose from at least.

The one in front you can see some red starting to show through, so that one won't be staying, but the male in the back who is in focus seems to be the darkest and I want to say he's the more dominant of the group. His comb is definitely the biggest at the moment (not including their "mama" who has turned out to be a male and just started his crowing. Poor guy is just not meant to last.
