a word about eggbinding

hi all, i know that each of you have either gone through eggbinding or read about it. i just want to say that i am not all that new to chickens i have had chickens for several years but i never knew what was actually happening to my hens ( i've lost at least 3 to eggbinding) until i joined this forum. i have learned alot but i still don't know how to prevent or avoid it & the signs are there but usually they are on the border of being to late & i live in the city there are no vets here that take care of poultry, i guess i'm asking what kind of preventatives, how can i avoid this problem? i now have a 3 yr old hen that is bound i have done all the things that i read about, ie; calcium aspirin warm bath lubrication sun lamp i don't know what else to do. right now she is comfortable goes to a vet i found (a city away) in the am at 9:30
(hope she makes it) shes a beautiful bird black sex link named honky! her sister died of the same thing. wish there was more info on this tragic problem!

Hi Libby,

I don't think there's anything you can do to prevent this problem. I recall reading that the high-egg producing breeds suffer from these sorts of issues more than other breeds. The sex-links get it more than most others.

You have done so much for her already! What a lucky girl she is.

You could give some thought to getting different breeds in the future.

I'm so sorry about your poor girl, and I hope she makes it.
