I volunteer at my local animal shelter and today, two high schoolers brought in a baby bird; they say they found the baby near the parking lot in the grass. What kind of bird am I looking at? And how old do you think it is? Is it a wild breed? There are no farms or chickens allowed in the city, so I jumped to it being a wild breed, but its down feathers and lack of tail make me question that... and people have been known to buy chickens, despite the zoning. Perhaps someone discarded it...

That is a Rhode Island Red chick. Good thing you found her! You ought to buy her some friends to keep her company. ;)
I almost did stop at the farm store on my way home, but hesitated. If I have to go back into town for a chick friend tomorrow, I can. :)

I wasn't planning on raising anymore chicks... I'm actually debating on taking a break from my coop, once my last original chicken passes (she's 9 years old; I do know though it could be a few more years... :D), but couldn't say no to this one. No one at the shelter was prepared to take the chick home, so I figured why not? I can always rehome the chick to a loving family if I need to; but def with a plan and not just on a whim, like today!

Thank you for your reply, Lacy Duckwing! Really appreciate it!
