CONCRETEBOX
Chirping
Hey all...I bought a house that came with this chicken coop in poor condition. Chicks haven't lived there in a while. There were no nest boxes or roosts. For a while I thought it was a dog house, but once I started working on it...the fragrance of chicken poop made it clear.
The inside was covered spiderwebs and dirt. I had to completely disassemble to start cleaning. Part of the roof was rotten so I used a power saw to chop it off. The inside floor was partially rotted away, so I removed it too. I will be replacing it with treated plywood. They previous builder used chipboard...which just soaked up all the moisture it could.
I spent an hour in a crouch position brushing way the spiderwebs...what a leg workout! Ouch. The I dug it out of the ground, put it up on blocks and give it a good power washing. Part of the chipboard floor is still stuck between the base and the wall framing...I'll cut them with a saw next so I can replace the floor. I will install some vents on either side too (another thing the previous builder forgot).
It's 4x8 so more than enough space for my five birds. I plan on building a nest box inside the 4x8 area since there is plenty of room. Of course roosts are on the list. I have a automatic door to install as well. There is a telephone pole/clothesline just a few inches from the coop...kinda makes it hard to work around the coop. I plan to move it a little bit closer to the house. Somewhere I'll add a window or skylight. I'll paint it of course...I've already decided it has to be red with white trim and black hardware.
I am still deciding what to do about the roof...any ideas? I'm thinking of wood and shingles...I've got spare plywood and shingles...but I'd have to buy more asphalt paper (which isn't sold in small quantities). I have some tar-like sealant...I was planning on use that on the joint between the old roof and the new roof.
Anyways...thanks for reading folks! Looking forward to this forum.
