Abandoned kitten....update...new pics on page 8

That's funny, because I can't sleep either and I'm sitting here watching a brooder with a cat ON it!

My old, crotchety Maine Coon cat is laying on top the brooder giving my chicks the stink eye because they have chopped boiled egg right now and he doesn't ...

thanks for all the info everyone. I picked up the KMR this morning and have been trying to get her to suckle for a while now. I guess it takes some time to get the to take a nipple from everything I've been reading. Hopefully she will catch on sometime this afternoon. She did take a little bit, but not much. I can tell that she is very hungry, but she doesn't like the bottle. I have the nipple cut so the milk drips out very slowly so I think I have the flow about right. I'll check back in a while in case anyone has any suggestions on how to get her to suckle.

Lol! Lots of these kitties lately!! Mine kept aspirating with the bottle so I went for a 1cc syringe. She sucked it and has started chewing on it. They grow up fast!

Finally got her to suckle after about an hour. She was nursing on my finger and a kinda snuck the nipple in on the side. After that she drank a bit and is now sleeping.

Don' t forget to rub tummy and bottom with a warm cotton ball, tissue, or ... to get kitty to poo and pee. Not the best job in the world, I know, but kitty will certainly thank you

If cow's milk was going to hurt them I wouldn't have a lot of the cats I've got now. I don't feed adult cats milk simply because most times it will give them diarrhea, but I've raised many kittens over the years using my "kitten formula" made from cow's milk. The main ingrediant in KMR is dried skim milk....cow's milk.

Well, I jumped off the deep end. I went out at midnight and found the mother had left a kitten. I brought it in. I'm just can't go to bed knowing that there is this very young kitten out in the yard alone, cold and probably hungry. She was cold and snuggled right up. It is not as young as I thought, but still really young. Eyes are open, but still the early blue eyes of a very young kitten. I'm guessing about 2 weeks maybe a bit more. Sorry Doc, but I mixed up some condensed milk (all I had), molasses, egg yolk and electrolytes. It took a little bit. Early as I can tomorrow I will be picking up some KMR or goats milk and that should work just fine. I used a dropper, had the kitten on her stomach and she (pretty sure it's female) took some in. I placed her in my chick brooder in an area that is about 75-80 degrees in a towel and set my alarm for about 4 hours. Going to be a long night I guess. Oh well. This is good for my soul, but maybe not my health. Dang, I'm getting old and a softy to boot. Going to do what I can to keep this kitten alive. She does seem pretty healthy so maybe hopefully she will be just fine.

I agree with you 100% doc. I need to deal with the feral cats I have here. They reek havoc on the song bird population. I don't want to kill them and if I can trap/find and remove them to adoption I will do that. I'm I hunter, but I don't like shooting cats or dogs unless I am out of options. I am rarely out of options. Here are a couple pics. How could I not do a rescue tonight??

How old do you think this kitten is??

Cute kitten...I'd say almost 3 weeks.

like many things with animals, your mileage may vary. i was once given a rescued kitten that had been found by good samaritans -- they gave it cow milk for one night before they brought it in, and the kitten very nearly died from the dehydration that the resulting diarrhea caused. it took weeks to really recover, with constant monitoring. some can handle it, some can't. kittens are sooo fragile anyway, why take the risk when you can get KMR, processed to be digested easily. also, the main issue with cow milk anyway is that it's not nutritious enough for a kitten - so even if they're able to digest it, they will slowly starve if given nothing else. a kitten formula made with milk can be okay, but cow milk by itself is NOT, and cow milk by itself is exactly what most well-meaning people with no knowledge end up feeding kittens, doing more harm than good =/
