Abcess, Eggbound or?

So prior to this my little bantam stopped eating as much and drinks more water. Someone suggested an obstruction so I decided to give her warm soak.

Admittedly I have never checked a chicken for obstruction or illness as she is my first. However I'm noticing a slight hard mass under her vent. Which is puckering and moving a lot. I don't actually know if that's normal chicken stuff so I defer to you guys.

Put on a glove, cover your finger in vaseline, coconut oil, anything like that, and feel inside her vent to see if there is an egg. Be gentle, you don't want to break the egg inside her. If you do feel an egg though, then she is egg bound.

Oh god it's not an egg. The mass is very clearly under her intestines. I flipped her over and found a red mass under her feathers.

How old is you bantam hen? Has she laid eggs recently? Hens can develop conditions, such as a full lower belly from intermal laying or ascites (water belly,) hernia, and cancer. How is her crop emptying overnight? Can you offer some high protein treats of scrambled egg bits or tuna, along with her usual chicken feed?

The thing is I rescued her from poor conditions in a pet store. I'm not sure how old she is. I posted another thread and someone guessed she's about 1. She's never laid an egg since I've had her and the weather is pretty cold so I don't know if that was a factor.

Her crop empties over night from what she does eat. She is still willing to eat her favorite treats like grubs and garlic. I haven't given her yhe usual fibrous treats because she's way too thin.

You might try worming her with Valbazen or SafeGuard Liquid Goat Wormer, and treating her with Corid for possible coccidiosis, just in case. Probiotics and vitamin B complex might be good to use after Corid.

Dots sadly passed away. I went to check on her and she was stiff as a board. It had only been 3 or 4 hours since I turned the lights out to sleep. She had eaten prior and was still drinking water. She was just extremely thin and tired.

Sorry that you lost her so soon after posting a thread. To find out what might have been wrong, you can either get a necropsy by your state vet, or sometimes you can sometimes get a clue by doing an autopsy at home.
