So I just picked up a bunch of hatching eggs from a breeder, and because a few of them had been under a hen for possibly up to three days I went ahead and candled the whole bunch. There are three that are definitely viable and a few days ahead of the rest, but then I have four other abnormal eggs and wanted to confirm my suspicion that these three have the infamous "red ring of doom" and should be tossed out asap.

The final egg I converted the pictures to black-and-white to try and bring out the detail of what's going on in there, because I really can't figure out what it is, I'm just going out on a limb and guessing it's not good....

Over all, if I lose 4 out of 21 and I only paid for a dozen, I'm still coming out way ahead! I just want to avoid exploding eggs in my incubator!

Yes, the three have a blood ring. Which means an embryo started developing but died. The last also looks dead to me. It doesn’t look like a live healthy embryo. Still good for 4 out of 21!

Sorry about the 4 dead ones, but happy for the rest. What breed are they? Just for conversations sake...

They are Silkies! The breeder I got these from has really nice ones, plus I'm picking up a dozen from some different bloodlines at the Ohio National swap in a few weeks. I swear, if it doesnt work out this time, I'm not trying to have Silkies ever again (pest problems. I've had to turn one side of my coop into Fort Knox).
