This little guy hatched early this morning, around 6am. It’s day 21 but I wasn’t expecting any hatched til later in the day. It’s eyes look very abnormal. They’re big however the eyelid seems too small for them. I didn’t inspect it yet because I don’t want to open the bator until the rest hatch, but it appears that only part of the iris shows. It can blink properly tho.

It also hatched with this on it. I’m not sure what it is... but it’s not poo.

Is the appendage hanging off the umbilicus? Sometimes they can take a day or two to dry up and fall off. Put some betadine on daily it if that is connected to the navel.

As far as the eyes being large, there have been some chicks born with overly large bug eyes. Many times in threads I have read, the eye fluid may collapse, leaving the chicks blind. Does it seem to see anything yet? You can try some lubricating ointment or drops if the the eye becomes dry. Here are some threads about the same type of eye problem:

Looks normal to me

That makes me feel better. Maybe it’ll look more normal to me when he’s all fluffed up...

@Eggcessive no, the glob or whatever it is, is not hanging from the navel. It was on its back when I saw it first and it’s like a sticky, well, glob.

I checked out those threads but the eyeballs of those chicks actually bulge out whereas the surrounding area of the eye is what appears swollen on my chick. It might just be me being super anxious and paranoid tho. This group of eggs was shipped so I’m expecting the worst.

The glob is just some leftover stuff from hatching. It’ll dry up and you can remove it once everyone is hatched.

I agree that the eyes look normal to me. Many species have large eyes as small animals to help with other lack of senses they may have as babies.
