I bought some play sand last night at Lowe's to use as grit for our 3 week olds. Does a chicken know when they need to eat more grit? If I start giving them treats today and some of them haven't ate the sand will they just start eating the sand because there body is telling them they need it?

We just offered a little to our chicks and they ate it right up. I thought they might eat too much, so after that I just sprinkled a little (like salt, on the advice of another member here) onto their food. When they got older I put a tin of bigger grit in the coop and they take what they need now.
