Hello! I guess I am still new about chickens because I certainly I do not have any answers! My grandmother had chickens when I was little but there were just there, not much interaction from my part. Now, a grandmother of seven, I live in the hot Texas country and I started with chickens after I retired about four years ago?
I bought about 10 brown chickens from a "friend of a friend", supposed to be pullets... In the beginning there were eggs almost every day, little by little less and less, and less chickens as well. I am down to one and one handsome rooster that someone gave me few months ago.
Here is my question. I received three chickens this last Tuesday that they are about a year old. They lived in a large ranch sharing the place with many other chickens. As I expected they were scared of the new home. What I didn't expect is to find one of them dying last night. I put her in a separate cage with hay, water and some grains. She is still there, her head is down, I did find her at times laying on top the water (her but), and I am wondering if the rooster could've have something to do with her stress level. Could that cause a chicken to die? the stress I mean. When I reached out to pick her up he came running straight at me and did not want me to put her in the coop where they stay for the night.
On a side note I do not use any fertilizer or insecticide anywhere in my ranch, I respect the wildlife and I protect them (unless I find a roach in my house!!)
Thank you !
