About me

Hello! I guess I am still new about chickens because I certainly I do not have any answers! My grandmother had chickens when I was little but there were just there, not much interaction from my part. Now, a grandmother of seven, I live in the hot Texas country and I started with chickens after I retired about four years ago?

I bought about 10 brown chickens from a "friend of a friend", supposed to be pullets... In the beginning there were eggs almost every day, little by little less and less, and less chickens as well. I am down to one and one handsome rooster that someone gave me few months ago.

Here is my question. I received three chickens this last Tuesday that they are about a year old. They lived in a large ranch sharing the place with many other chickens. As I expected they were scared of the new home. What I didn't expect is to find one of them dying last night. I put her in a separate cage with hay, water and some grains. She is still there, her head is down, I did find her at times laying on top the water (her but), and I am wondering if the rooster could've have something to do with her stress level. Could that cause a chicken to die? the stress I mean. When I reached out to pick her up he came running straight at me and did not want me to put her in the coop where they stay for the night.

On a side note I do not use any fertilizer or insecticide anywhere in my ranch, I respect the wildlife and I protect them (unless I find a roach in my house!!)

Thank you !
Thanks...

She looks pretty sick.
Is she getting up to eat and drink on her own?

@MonaLisa1

Are the others acting sick like she is?

The other ones are doing ok, they are sticking together but they don't want to come out of the coop.
I just went to see her and she was trying to stand up, and it looked like she put her butt in the water again. I'm not sure if she is eating , her eyes were still shut. Its so strange to me, because she looked pretty perky when she arrived, although was running up the down the fence and it took me a while to convince her to go into the coop. Thomas (he is our ranch hand) was going to bring me two more and I refused, I don't want to see them suffer :-(

Thank you for your support.
