ABOUT TO SET 24 MARANS EGGS! ANYONE ELSE SETTING EGGS? DEC. 14-16, Hatch Jan. 3-5th.

Candled mine this evening. From what I can tell looks like I have only a few that look like they may not be developing. I will candle mine again just before lockdown and remove those that are no good.

How's everyone else coming along?

Happy Holidays everyone!

I candled again this morning...

The 2 that I thought were clear were still clear. So, I cooked them for breakfast (FOR THE CHICKENS). They love scrambled eggs with garlic, corn and any leftovers I have! The other 4 eggs have bouncing, little embryos inside and I'm so excited for them to hatch on January 4th.

Congratulations on a good bunch of developing chicks.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who fed the dud candled eggs back to the chickens. Is it important to cook them first? They didn't smell so I just smashed them up with mash and fed them to the flock.

Being able to feed the chickens "eggs" is one of the reasons I take out the duds early. They love it and I don't have to worry about them rotting and contaminating the other developing chicks. I have always cooked eggs first, especially if they were in the incubator or eggs that I don't know the age of. Eggs and shells can harbor a lot of bacteria.

Since I don't take mine out until at least after day 10..... I would be a little afraid to break mine open anywhere near my house. I usually just throw them in a nearby patch trees not too far of my back patio. Unless I want to break them open and check embryo development.

Out of 7, I only had 1 that didn't look like anything at all was happening, so out it came. There are definate signs of movement in about half of those left. The other half I'm unsure about. I see what appears to be a lot of stuff growing, but I'm not seeing the same movement as in the others. I did get a more powerful flashlight recently though. I might candle again tonight.

I candled this evening. Results were less than impressive. I had 13 that I pulled out of my 32 eggs. The rest are definitely developing good. I got 24 Black/Blue/Splash Marans eggs off eBay and looks like the eBay eggs aren't that good. I marked them with an "e". All those I pulled have an "e" on them. :( Maybe they are old. The breeder was only one state away from me and arrived in two days. Oh well I guess that's the way it goes with shipped eggs sometimes.
Anyone else candle this weekend? Happy New Years everyone!

Shipped eggs are a challenge. I've tried hatching twice this year with eggs all the way from Georgia. The first time I got 4 chicks out of 16 eggs and the second time I got 5 chicks out of 30 eggs. If you get anything at least it is't a total waste. They say 1/2 is actually good for shipped.

Tomorrow is lockdown allready for my 4 little test eggs!

I'll probably candle late tonight or before it gets light out in the morning. Even if I don't see movement everything will probably stay in the bator!

Yeah shipped eggs are a challenge. I've had mixed results whenever I've tried shipped eggs. I sell and ship hatching eggs all the time and my buyers seem to have good and even great hatch results. I guess I'm just going to have to stick with hatching my own for a while. I bought the marans eggs because I thought mine were about to quit laying because of cold weather. Boy was I wrong. They have been laying like crazy the lady couple weeks. I decided to sell a few I am getting so many.
I am excited about this weekend mine should hatch Saturday-ish..... Sunday..... I have to get my brooder ready and pick up some chick starter.
