New to raising chickens, have been absorbing hours and hours of information on this forum. Everything is ready: coop, bedding, heating pad, water source, food is fermenting and we are excited! Then I realized I have no idea how to get our new chicks home from the feed store where we are picking them up tomorrow morning. It will be 30 degrees and windy. I will be cold, so I assume they will be also. Guess I have some more research to do tonight.

If you have a car with a heater, you'll be fine! How many? Glad you're using MHP system! If I have to pick up chicks, I just pre heat the car, and leave the heater running full blast. Me, I wear a short sleeved shirt, even if it is bone shaking cold out! Plenty warm in the car.

You put 'em in a little cardboard box, close the lid, and set it on the front seat next to you. At least that's how I get them home. They go through a lot worse than that when they are mailed in an even smaller cardboard box!

Welcome to BYC! It's really great to have you here!

Welcome...X2 on a box. If you are worried about cold you could invest in one of these:

Deb, just curious... do you drive a CRV? If you do, you're all set. My CRV has a heater that could barbecue chicken!!!
Ha!!! I have TWO CRV's!! Your are absolutely right, they are the best, if you are always cold like I am. I guess I know everything now....no need to spend the night reading endless conversations about raising chickens. (Joking.....I am having a blast! Had no idea chickens could be so interesting, and the contributors here are great!)

I'm always hot. So, hubby and I always fight over the heater. He'll be wearing hat, gloves, jacket. Mean while I'm tweaking the setting toward AC, and stripped down to short sleeves! Our newer car is a RAV 4. That thing just doesn't put out the heat like the CRV!!!
