Excellent info!! Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!!
My husband & I have both been eyeing the Welsummer roo as what I want for my Layer's this next spring. Because they're so beautiful, I was a li'l concerned about their temperament...I figured it can't possibly be
that gorgeous
and sweet!!
I currently have a flock of 5 Mille Fleur D'Uccles (4 pullets/1 cockerel), flock of 6 bantam Cochin's (5 hens/1 roo), 1 White-Crested Black Polish hen (will add a boy & 4 more girls in the spring - lol), a Khaki Campbell duck trio & 2 Production Red ducks, 4 Ringneck Pheasant's & 24 Blue/Black/Splash bearded Silkie eggs in the incubator (plus 4 Splash 2-week old's in the brooder). My goal is to add a small flock of 6 Speckled Sussex (1 cock/5 pullets) and some layer's. The layers will include the Wellie cock & the following pullets: 2 Blue-Laced Red Wyandotte, 2 Black Copper Maran's, 2 Exchequer Leghorn's, 2 Easter Egger's, 2 Red Star's & 2 Dominique's. I want a colorful egg basket! LoL!!
When I 1st started with my own chickens a few years ago, I bought several different breeds & worked with them, observed them, etc. I sold off the ones I didn't 'like' & have since been working towards my 'perfect' poultry crew. We're in the process of making several 'mini' coops & placing them in different locations with garden beds, etc. (think miniature golf course). In the meantime, I sold/gave away even more chickens & now I have to pretty much start over. That's OK though because I want to be really selective now that I know what I want. I love roosters, so of course I
must have one for my layer coop!! I've had good & bad experiences with most breeds, but have never met a Wellie before. This thread helped me make that last decision. Thank you!!
