I was clearing out what was left of an old hay bale (and bringing in new ones) when I found 3 hidden eggs and no momma near. Two were rotten- literally broke in my hand (and smelled awful!). The last one was cracked... and had a little beak poking out! There was no movement, and there were cats in the yard. I took it in, set up a heat lamp, and cautiously peeled back a piece of the shell. Then a little foot kicked out and it was clearly ready to be put down! I kept it under the lamp and let it finish freeing itself from the egg. It is tiny and precious!
Assumed parents:
male turken and female frizzle
(baby has naked neck and feathered legs, came from a small brown egg)
Potential name: Haybale (named for the location it was found.
-pic taken before I ran to the garage to get bedding.
UPDATE!
Can chickens imprint on people? This one peeps/cries loudly when I step away to get things done. Instantly quiet when I'm in sight.
Should it have a stuffed animal to cuddle?
ADDITIONAL UPDATE:
Little one is active and alert, still chirps loudly when I leave. Silly question- is it a bantam? I usually have other chicks to compare size. It looks small, came from a small egg. Bantam mom and standard sized father.
