Accidental new duck owner

Yeah, I'm a real worrier about predators, just to let you know.

There are so many things that eat duck, and they sleep on the ground, quite soundly sometimes. I'd hate for something to happen to that little gem.

Wherever you put her to keep her safe, I find that offering treats in that location really helps my ducks warm up to a new place right away. Mine like peas, thawed from frozen.

nope you need to worry about the neighborhood dogs, foxes, bobcats, owls, hawks. etc.. please get her an safe house where she can be locked up at night..It is so sweet of you to take her in, she is a doll..

I think she is beautiful no matter her breed. She does look like she has welsh harlequin in her tho. I'm so glad she found a new home with you. I love those blue feathers on her wings. I have placed an order with Metzers for 3 WH and I hope mine are as pretty.

I have to actually lock her in it? *Sigh* I guess that makes a certain amount of sense now that I think of it. Duck keeping has become slightly more complex than it seemed... not that any of this is hard really, don't get me wrong.

Well except maybe pond care. LOL Anywho... will see what we can do asap. I guess I could lock her in the garage/grooming shop if I had to. Bleh, just dont relish cleaning the mess in the mornings. Maybe she'll become friendly with out chickens when they are old enough and can go in the chicken coop at night? Maybe not. Glad I had this forum to answer questions I didn't even know I had

Man, I had NO idea that ducks could be so friendly. She comes running now whenever we come outside and tonight when my husband came home she was sleeping in a neighbors yard and came high tailing it to the pond for him to wash out her dish and give her some fresh water and lovins lol

I believe if a hatchery sent me that claiming its a crested welsh harlequin i'd be ticked.

Not all their birds are that dark. I have one that looks mch more standard, but yeah...obvious coloring flaws. Strangely, my worst looking welsh harlequin is my best layer.

Same dad (A holderread's drake) and different moms...both from Metzer.

years ago, when I got baby chics and ducks, the store clerk told me to buy duck feed or else if they eat chic feed, they'll die. I had a place for them in the garage and all of them were in the same place, how can I tell them "don't eat that, that's chic feed " Chics ate duck feed and ducks ate chicken feed and nothing happened, thank God. Now I have 3 ducks and 21 chicken and they all eat the same thing, egg layer and scratch. Ask where you get your chicken feed for more info. This is my experience with them. She or he looks gorgeous

I havent read all the posts but when i opened the page and seen the duck, I think it looks alot like a welsh harlequin. I am hoping to add 4-5 to my flock of khakis.

Thats because you are her flock. Get her some friends and she will ignore you. My khakis were sweet once, now that they have a drake I am chopped liver.

Not necessarily.....

Ducks are very social animals and IMO, it would be cruel to keep a duck alone for it's entire life.
