A few weeks ago I bought what I was told was an almost-point-of-lay Orpington Hen. As a first time chicken owner, although i did have some misgivings over her colour and the glossiness of her neck feathers, I took the seller at her word, but over the last few weeks Delilah (my absolute favorite 'Hen') has been making me suspicious...

She has been moulting and growing beautiful glossy black feathers in place of the soft blue ones, has started to fan out her neck feathers when she's threatened, become the most attentive bird in the flock, watching out for predators etc, grown these huge wattles and comb, and is yet to lay an egg!

I was still clinging on to the hope that she may be a hen, as i have close neighbors, but this morning she let out an almighty crow! So I'm forced to accept that Delilah is indeed a boy. I've contacted the seller and I'm convinced that she did think Delilah was a girl. She hasn't been keeping chickens all that long herself so I guess it is forgivable. She's offered a refund or exchange but I'm going to hold on to him and wait and see what the neighbors think as he really is a lovely boy! The problem is, Delilah just doesn't seem to suit him anymore, so I'm looking for a new name. Any suggestions?

Here are some pictures to help you, I've added a picture of what she looked like when we first brought her home (which I'm sure shows my naivety in sexing chickens!) Thanks in advance :)

Don't really have any name suggestions. Wait until his personality forms, it will come to you!

Orpingtons are rather slow to mature, so it is understandable. He is definitely developing some impressive, pointy saddle feathers and hackle feathers. My Buff Orpington roosters tuned out to be really nice and very entertaining. I like thinking up names with the help of this web site: http://www.bowwow.com.au/find-a-nam...etter=D&type=&animal_type=&sex=Male&startat=3

I selected male names starting with D, and a few that I like are Duncan, Dylan, Donovan. I suppose Dell is a name, too, but now I associate it with Dell computers.

You can explore that pet name site a bit by going to the original search feature. Let us know what name you choose for the handsome cockerel.
