I just finished up a hatch on Monday but had one straggler egg not due to hatch until (I thought) this weekend. There is one chick still in the bator who is not doing well (cannot stand) so I left it in there and have been trying to see if it will bounce back or if we may need to cull it. It is a very determined little one! chirps very loudly which is why I'm hesitant to cull it just yet.
Anyway, my problem/question is about a 1/2 hour ago I came home and heard it peeping away so i cracked the lid of the bator (only opened one side about 6 inches, just to peek in) to see if maybe it was up and around....to my surprise the OTHER egg still in there was pipped! WOW! um, now I'm wondering if I just ended up spelling that chick's demise!?! the pip hole is very, very tiny--that very first pip hole you see-- but you can see the membrane (shell is off). It is positioned in a way that had i not opened the bator from that particular side I would never have even seen it and cannot monitor it for progress unless it rolls around. I know it had to have pipped sometime today b/c it was not pipped last night.
My humidity is at 64%, a bit higher than i like but i've really struggled to keep it any lower this time around.
This lone egg was supposed to get put back under my broody hen as it was accidentally collected a couple weeks ago. I just tossed it in the bator at the time, planning on putting it back under mama. I have been sick the last couple days so I haven't really had the energy to do much of anything. Finally rounding the corner now and was planning on putting it back tonight--looks like i'm too late for that! Good thing we moved mama to her own little area last weekend, i knew i should have put that egg back at that time but i didn't want to mess with the ongoing hatch at that time.
SO, I guess I'm just looking for maybe some reassurance that this pipped egg has a chance? anyone? I'd say the top was slightly open for maybe 10-20 seconds, 30 tops.
