I’ve been reading and (over) thinking how to go about administering ACS to a hen with a stubborn sour/doughy crop.

1/4 tsp in a gallon of water seems to be the recommended dose. So of course I go to mix up my batch and realize my bag package says this:

I ordered it from Twin City Poultry, so I assume that dose is intended for poultry.

So now I’m back to not knowing what to do. Should I use 1/4 or 1/2 tsp to a gallon of water?

And since I’m making this post and I’m an anxious overthinker…

I’m planning to give it to the whole flock for a minimum of 3 days. Then I’m going to stop administration when the hen’s crop is not doughy for 2 mornings in a row OR 10 days- whichever comes first. From what I read 10 days seems to be the maximum time it’s safe to administer. But some posts here said to give it for 3-5 days and other people said 7-10. I don’t want to give it any longer than necessary. Any recommendations on duration of administration?

Thank you! (From me and Nugget)

I would use 1/4 tsp per gallon of water for 3-5 days. That is a pretty standard dosage, but I don’t know if there are different strengths of the powder. McMurrays hatchery and Jedds.com, and the dosage is always 1/4 tsp per gallon.
Thanks. Thats what I ended up doing. I figured over dosing would be worse than under dosing.

So yesterday was day 5 of the ACS treatment. The good news is that the hen’s crop has been empty every morning (no “dough” or what I thought felt like a piece of chewed gum). And this morning she had only solid stool under her!

However when I check her crop in the AM, it makes a squirty/airy/gassy sound. No other hens’ crops make that noise when I check.

Do you think I should stop the ACS or go another couple days? What would cause her crop to essentially make fart noises when I press on it?

I wouldnt worry about the air in her crop. As long as it is emptying is all that matters. It's good news that she's pooping normally. That means that she doesnt have an impacted gizzard and the food is passing normally.
Just observe her for a few days, the air in her crop should stop.

I would prefer that @dawg53 or @Wyorp Rock answer this. For what I know, it is used for 5 days. It is good that her crop is emptying.
Agreed.

How is your hen? My ACS arrives today. I hope to finally see some improvement.
She is doing great! The ACS seemed to make all the difference. I could feel improvement in her crop by the 3rd day and she was 100% cleared up 5 days after.

I hope it works as well for your flock. When I went back through my notes I’d been dealing with this hen’s crop all year. Now it’s 2 months later and she’s still good to go!
