I've consulted knowledgable folks about it and read in the huge Diseases of Poultry reference book. It's not something that can be prevented or cured (other than hysterectomy). High production birds bred to keep producing with no real breaks are very susceptible to it. That is almost all hatchery stock, I'd say. If the hen is the broody type, she'll probably avoid it since her body gets long rest periods.

Thanks for the link, Cyn. I read more about it on your post over there. Im sorry for all of your losses. That's just terrible. I've had my share of that this year. I found 4 of my 5 rats dead yesterday, Im just a big ball of bad luck this year.

Hey Cyn. I'm not sure, but a big hornet critter was stuck in their cage and their faces were swollen so I think it may have had something to do with it. It sure is frustrating.
