My Chickens were attacked by the neighbors dogs. The neighbors are my in-laws.

I was in the shower and heard a commotion. My indoor dogs were barking, but when I came out, they were in the other room looking a different direction. So, I wasn’t too worried, but still went to check. As I looked out the back door, I saw the two dogs.

We had put up a temporary run extension using lattice to give them extra space. I thought the chickens would be fine since I lock them into the secured part and their coop every night.

Well, one of the dogs was able to nip at them through the lattice. The poor girls had decided to hide under the tarp that I put on that end to get ready for the winter. :hit

I ran out as fast as I could and yelled at the dogs. One was just waiting for the other to bring the chickens out. Because this is what they do when they hunt groundhogs and such. The one attacking was not listening. I grabbed her and pulled her away. She went back 3 times. The last time I saw a branch that I had in their run, but took it out and it was beside the run. I grabbed that and yelled for her to go home. When I did that, she started to take off. I never hit her, but if she wouldn’t have stopped I would have.

My girls all have beak injuries. Most are up near the nostril, but one my EE had the top half pulled off. I can still see part of her upper beak, so it’s not completely gone. I guess there must be layers of beak?

Anyway, once the dogs were gone I tended to the girls as best that I could. My fil inadvertently brought the dogs down while checking his farm and forgot I had chickens so he never thought twice when the dogs weren’t with him in his utv until my mil said something to him. He came back and retrieved the dogs. :barnie

Anyway, I wiped them down with a warm cloth. Checked them all over. And applied bag balm to any injuries. One had a small injury on her comb as well. My mil actually had blue Kote, so I sprayed some on a gloved finger and dabbed any place that had blood showing through. The bleeding had stopped once I wiped them down earlier.

I also spent all afternoon repairing the lattice so that there was hardware cloth surrounding it. I’m still going to lock them up in the evenings.

I wish the weather were nicer as I really want to build a more secure coop and run. Of course the extra hw cloth that I added to their run held up. So I’m happy for that.

I’m going to go get some vetricyn tomorrow. Anything else that I should stock up on?

Needless to say - today didn’t go as planned. :(

I should mention that I’ve been out there most of the day with them. They are all acting normal. I thought they would be more traumatized. I know I am! :barnie:he

Are they all able to eat, drink, and preen OK with the beak injuries?

They seem to be. The one with the top beak split, I was worried about and took her off to the side with me to see if she would eat. But, I don’t think she wanted to while I was holding her. Later I took a piece of sliced turkey out and she gobbled that up. I will watch this morning to see how she does with food.

I just went out. All of them seemed to be eating just fine. One was already turning around to go back in the coop to lay an egg.

@micstrachan Thanks. I’m glad that they are in good spirits and weren’t hurt worse. They all seem to be going about their business as usual. I went out to check to see if they laid eggs, got 3. One doesn’t lay every day and when she does it’s later in the afternoon. One of my IB’s was sitting in the dust bath - seem happy enough.
I just took them out some live crickets. Gobbled them up as quick as they could.

Their beak is made of keratin and will continue to grow. As long as they can still eat and drink fine it should be ok. There is a product called steri-tape that is like a breathable medical tape that can be cut to size (it is sometimes used to help keep skin together after stitches are taken out) that might help if the split beak needs a bit of support.

Oh- I just found this article. Apparently you can glue it?

Best of luck. Let us know how it goes.
