My Chickens were attacked by the neighbors dogs. The neighbors are my in-laws.
I was in the shower and heard a commotion. My indoor dogs were barking, but when I came out, they were in the other room looking a different direction. So, I wasn’t too worried, but still went to check. As I looked out the back door, I saw the two dogs.
We had put up a temporary run extension using lattice to give them extra space. I thought the chickens would be fine since I lock them into the secured part and their coop every night.
Well, one of the dogs was able to nip at them through the lattice. The poor girls had decided to hide under the tarp that I put on that end to get ready for the winter.
I ran out as fast as I could and yelled at the dogs. One was just waiting for the other to bring the chickens out. Because this is what they do when they hunt groundhogs and such. The one attacking was not listening. I grabbed her and pulled her away. She went back 3 times. The last time I saw a branch that I had in their run, but took it out and it was beside the run. I grabbed that and yelled for her to go home. When I did that, she started to take off. I never hit her, but if she wouldn’t have stopped I would have.
My girls all have beak injuries. Most are up near the nostril, but one my EE had the top half pulled off. I can still see part of her upper beak, so it’s not completely gone. I guess there must be layers of beak?
Anyway, once the dogs were gone I tended to the girls as best that I could. My fil inadvertently brought the dogs down while checking his farm and forgot I had chickens so he never thought twice when the dogs weren’t with him in his utv until my mil said something to him. He came back and retrieved the dogs.
Anyway, I wiped them down with a warm cloth. Checked them all over. And applied bag balm to any injuries. One had a small injury on her comb as well. My mil actually had blue Kote, so I sprayed some on a gloved finger and dabbed any place that had blood showing through. The bleeding had stopped once I wiped them down earlier.
I also spent all afternoon repairing the lattice so that there was hardware cloth surrounding it. I’m still going to lock them up in the evenings.
I wish the weather were nicer as I really want to build a more secure coop and run. Of course the extra hw cloth that I added to their run held up. So I’m happy for that.
I’m going to go get some vetricyn tomorrow. Anything else that I should stock up on?
Needless to say - today didn’t go as planned.
