We don't happen to have any Kroger stores near us. Is ACV sold in other stores? What is it and what does it actually do to the water in buckets to keep it from greening up?? And if I do find this chemical somewhere how much do I put in the water to stop greening up? Are you certain it won't affect my chickens or eggs adversely?

Thanks Tony

ACV stands for Apple Cider Vinegar. The best type are the ones that still have the mother in them. The "mother" is the beneficial bacteria that turn the juice into vinegar. The ones that have the mother are usually cloudy looking. You can find ACV in many stores. Most regular grocery stores have Braggs AVC in the vinegar section and that brand has the mother in it. There are many other brands though so look at what is available in your area. You can also find ACV in health food stores.

As far as why it keeps the water from greening, it makes the water slightly more acid. The algae usually doesn't want to grow in acid water. Most people use about 1 to 3 tablespoons per gallon of water. Very important to have plastic container and not metal ones if you use ACV. The acid can etch metals into the water. Not good for the birds or the containers.

Hope this helps.

Trader Joes has it. Little glass bottle 16oz (maybe) for $2-something. I have a Walmart near me and they certainly do not carry it. Maybe mailorder is the way to go if your local resources are limited.

You can also make your own, let apple juice (frozen works best) sit in a mason jar in a cool dry place for a few weeks, shake it up once in a while, and make sure to allow the air to get to it. Eventually it will develop a cloudy appearance. This is the mother. I know that this suggestion will not be an immediate fix to your problem, but by the time you finish with a mail order bottle you will be making your own!

You can also use the mail order bottle and add it to the juice concentrate and it will make a little faster.
