Someone mentioned that they put something in their water and it helps to keep the waterer clean. I water outside in the summer and the algee inside the waterer grows overnight. I use galvanized and they are not problem it is the platic ones that get green.

Some people use Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) in the waterers. Its supposed to be good for the birds and help with absorbing nutrients. You can't use it in metal waterers though because it will react with the metal. Not sure exactly how much ACV to water. Maybe someone will chime in and give you that info.

I use ACV in my waterers. I change out the water once a day, every day. I have 5 Gal plastic waterers. I put about 3 gallons of water in the waterer every day. I use about 2 T. of ACV per gallon of water. The apple cider vinegar keeps the green algee from growing on the waterers. It is also good for the chickens, helps keep them healthy and makes their feathers shiny too.

I use one (1) tablespoon per gallon and sometimes even less. One thing, DO change the water daily when you are using the ACV (or any additive to water) or surely, not more than 2 days.

It took me about two months on here before I figured out what the heck ACV was. I finally just asked cause it was driving me crazy so now anytime I talk about it I type out Apple Cider Vinegar.

Yeah I just saw another abbreviation and I don't think I will wait to see what it is if the post is something that pertains to my flock. I love this site.

Dont forget to clean out the waterers at least once a week with bleach. I bought a baby bottle waher and everytime I change the water a go around the inside of the waterer with it quickly to help get anthing that is trying to grow out of the waterers. I use all plastic waterers so I can add ACV or anything else to their water is I want.
