ACV need to be unfiltered with mother?

If using ACV in the water, does it need to be unfiltered with the mother? Also...heard reasons why I should use it, and also people stating it's just an old wive's tale. Opinions?

I've used Bragg's before and after it ran out, been using regular ACV ever since without any issues.
