Just thought I'd throw this out there after catching my neighbor in the act of adding ACV to his METAL waterer...

While I'm a huge advocate when it comes to keeping my chickens healthy the "natural way" there is a such thing as doing it the "wrong way"...with good intentions, of course.

I come across many posts made by people with sick chickens that include some or all of the following symptoms:

- pale comb
- weight loss
- weak/unsteady
- trouble walking
- diarrhea

Zinc poisoning can be hard to identify because the symptoms (listed above) often times mimick a plethora of other illnesses and one of the questions we "seasoned chicken keepers" usually forget to ask in helping to diagnose is, "have you been using ACV in a metal waterer...and for how long?"

If you want to use ACV in your chicken's water, put it in a plastic waterer. However, clean water is the best thing you can provide any animal and should be the very first priority when it comes to keeping your chickens healthy the "natural way." :)

I couldn't agree more. I have used ACV in the past and from time to time still do. A lot of people don't like the idea but there is scientific evidence that acidifiers tend to be better for the avian gut.

You are right! There are some people that claim it has absolutely no benefits at all, while others claim it's a cure-all. My claim is as long as you're giving unpasteurized, organic, mother-containing, ACV it will provide SOME benefits...as long as it's given in a plastic container. :) So yes, I give it to my chickens too. :D

Here's a pretty good article that points to a couple of research studies on the topic that I found to be a good read:
