The point of the quarantine is to keep any sicknesses and germs he has to himself, so if they can come in contact with him, it's not gonna work.
When I quarantine, I'll always go from my flock --> new bird, or new bird-->change clothing-->old flock. You don't want anything he's brewing to get introduced to your girls.

If it's hens I'm throwing in, I keep them in a dog crate inside and let them out in a tractor where my flock not only can't come in contact, but won't be tromping around when the new one is crated- again, I don't want them coming in direct contact with any grossness. If I had to introduce another rooster, I'd probably just leave him in the tractor, since having them crow in the house gets old really fast. (*points at Capt. Frostbite*, who doesn't very much like his diaper, or quiet time)



And Whetzel, that's been my experience, too. My favorite rooster is usually my barometer for when to expect eggs from the younger girls. When he starts trying to do his thing, it's definitely egg time!

Being new to chickens, I have had mixed feelings regarding getting a rooster.

I first thought "no need for one" and or "I don't need the hassle".

Later I was thinking yes would be good for the hens and natural for a ranging flock.

I guess as I read about them and their behaviour I saw the positive side of ownership. They serve a important role and are stunning to look at.

So now I want one but it's too late, my spring order is in and I have ordered no roos... I guess my only hope is a sexing error in my order!

I'm actually not even sure which breed I would want for my NEW mixed flock.

Hopefully it's big, I'm sure with the large flock of pullets I ordered I could even support more then one so with any luck I'll have a few choices.

So now I'm hoping for a few roos in my order...or I'll have to add one later this summer.
