Are the same differences apparent between hens that are laying and hens that have laid but have not laid in a while?

Thank you for asking that, I was wondering how everyone knew who was laying and who had stopped. With this weather I've only been getting 1 egg a day from my 4 adult hens. Went out and checked em, that was an adventure, and all 4 look like they're still laying

when I bought my first chickens, the farmer I bought them from gave me a little lesson on how to tell if a hen has started laying. He told me "if you can fit two fingers in, chances are something the size of two fingers came out" then he proceeded to demonstrate while telling me to "be gentle".

it was very funny, but reading this now, it sounds a little creepy.
