Added a Rooster to my flock

I added a 5 month old americauna rooster to my flock for protection against predators. He doesn't seem that interested in the hens and goes off by himself. I was just wondering if the rooster needs to mature before he protects my flock?

How long ago did you add him? He's a bit young and being new he needs time to join the flock first, then he will protect and mate.

And, yes, it takes a cockerel a little while to get his groove on, especially when being added to a whole new environment and especially if the hens are older than he is.
