I have wanted chicks and chickens for years. When I was growing up we had chickens every year. I loved it .

I finally have a few chicks (after many years of trying to talk hubby into letting me have some). I ordered a dozen, 11 hens and 1 rooster. I lost one of the chicks at a week old, so that leaves me with 11 total. Four breeds: welsummer (that has the one roo in it), red star, cuckoo maran, and partridge rock.

I think I may have a bit of a problem. While I am having so much fun with the chicks (now over 5 weeks old) and looking forward to getting them out in their chicken house (10 x 10) and letting them have the run of 2-3 acres fenced in (to be shared with one quarter horse, two goats and two turkeys), I find myself already looking at getting more chicks next spring. Already planning on what breeds to add and how many of each.

I think I may be a bit addicted to chickens.

I am so excited for when they start laying eggs (going for the brown, dark brown and large size brown). And also find myself attracted to coloration of the chickens: gold lace wyandott, maybe blue lace red wyandott, etc.

Anyone else seem to be caught up in chickens?

I am so caught up with chickens (and ducks) I have trouble thinking about anything else. Right now I'm juggling possible names for four chicks about 5 weeks old. Plus I have a latch to put on the Duck House (which doesn't house ducks). Speaking OF ducks, Thelma the Cayuga started laying, and I'm worried that her choice of a nest location is lousy because most of the chickens like to scratch and dust bathe under that rose bush.

I "should" get rid of - re-home is the ONLY possibility - two of my extra roos, both of which are bantam breeds. I don't want to do that. I like 'em. One of the four chicks I need to name is probably a roo, but I'm not going to think about THAT situation until he crows.

I have 7 eggs in an incubator. This is my first attempt at incubating hatching eggs, Well, any eggs.... My Buffy hatched a solo chick and I'm hoping it's a pullet.

I have 2 more hours before I get off work and can stop trying to fit WORK in amongst my poultry thoughts.

Yes, I'm addicted.

Get a few of each!
Seriously, it's too late to turn back now. The addiction has taken hold and it's futile to try and resist.
Must... Get... More... Chickens...!!!
