I have a 5 years old mustang mare and have the opportunity to get a mini horse. I am not sure if I should. The mini is a 20 year old stallion. Would there be a problem with him being a stallion? The mini appears healthy but not sure if I will have problems in the very near future with him being 20. I was told that the mini can live to be 30 or more. What are your thoughts????? Would it be alot better if I decide to get a mini, to get another mare instead of the stallion.

It would be absolutely better to get a mare rather than a stallion. You'd have to have an exceptionally well behaved stallion...I've known one, but I've known a lot more mini stallions that are a LOT more trouble than a full sized stallion. They are fully capable of hurting you pretty badly. Too many people treat them like lapdogs rather than like livestock. Minis can be tough to have for that very reason; you will likely also have more trouble getting appropriate vet/farrier/dental care for him, minis can be difficult to work on so there are a lot of people out there who refuse to work on them, and there is a high rate of dwarfism out there. When you take all this and blend it into an animal that is likely to have even more attitude than a full sized stallion, and the size to squeeze through places you've never even imagined he could, you're better off passing it up. If you must get a mini, do yourself a favor and get a mare or gelding...this stud will still want to breed your mare despite his size, and she is likely to object to having a mini trying to mount her hind legs or bite her on her belly!

Also take into account whether your mare has ever even seen a mini before...some full sized horses *really* dislike minis and ponies. I've seen a mini stud kicked unconscious by a bigger horse who hated him.

You would definitely need to be sure they stay separated. Friend bought a mini-stallion some years ago. First time it got out a mare kicked him in the head and killed him.

Here's my experience... I adore my stallions. I currently have 2 - both young appy minis. Each one is very sweet and good in with my pony mare, but I will not put them in with my main herd. I had a 28" stud who was just wonderful, but he would get after my Belgian all the time. He would find any little opening in the fence, crawl between the boards... Just to annoy the big guy. Diesel would go underneath Travis and bite him in the belly. I went out one morning, and Big D was laying next to the fence. Travis had gotten him in the head overnight, and diesel didn't have a chance against those draft feet. I am getting choked up now, writing this, I felt horrible and blamed myself for what happened. I adored that mini, as I'm sure you will love yours. Don't take the chance - go with either a mare or gelding

. I wouldn't want someone to go through what I went through of it could possibly be avoided.

Thanks you for all your replys!! I think I will pass on the stallion. Just one other question, Is 20 years old, really old for a mini? How old do they live?

If you don't want babies, then yes there is a problem w/ him being a stallion.

Seen this happen too! The mini didn't get killed, but the bigger horse sure got hurt...mini bit him in the belly and kept biting, got under him and actually knocked him over a concrete trough and split it in half! The bigger horse was 17HH and was really banged up from that! That was one of those "thank God those aren't MY animals!" kind of days!

Minis *can* live a long time, because small size is conducive to longevity in the equine world. Less size is generally less stressful on their bodies unless they were born with dwarfism or badly inbred. However, I haven't personally seen too many last much past that...simply known too many people who got tired of them and moved them on to other homes where I lost track of them. I have known Shetland ponies that lasted into their 40s, though.
