Adding a ROOSTER

aoxa, That's so sweet! I love it when roosters are good. One of my roos loves chicks, and the other likes to pick them up (by the heads) and throw them. Luckily he knows not to hurt them and they just bounce back. ( I am relived to say I did find a better home for him, aka my freezer. )

Also, Glad to see someone else has Naked Necks, people say they're weird but I love my hen Gollum to death. We call her Gollum because she always goes after wedding rings.

That's the best place for him if he acts like that! Glad all my boys either leave them alone or are great fathers.

Yes! I am in love with my Naked Necks! I have 9 right now :D They are funky chickens!

Thank you for the advice.  I have a pair of Red Tail hawks that live across the stredet in the Eucalyptus grove.  I only have a few trees on my back property and it is only an acre and a half.  Do you think the red tail hawks will go after my babies?   My babies are about 2 months old?

Yes they will go for them.

If the hawks don't show much interest anyway I don't think they would. Like I said, if they have never had a chicken meal from yours they won't expect to have a chance. We have Red-tailed hawks that stalk our chickens once in a while but only bothered them once.

We used to have a big piece of cardboard on top of our run to patch a hole while we bought some wire. I think a hawk almost ran into the wire once and is scared now.

If you want to just let them out for an hour or so in the heat of the day the hawks and chickens will both be resting in the shade. I would just keep an eye on them. I was terrified the first time I free ranged mine but they were fine.

If you don't feel comfortable then don't let them out until you are ready.

Aoxa,

Great pics! I have a juvenile barred rock roo who I can't wait to see as an adult. Hope he's as considerate as yours. You're a wonderful photographer to get such a sweet series. (The first pic required a double-take, though, as it looks like one chicken with two heads!)

Thank you! He has been feeding them like that since they were itty bitty balls of fluff. I just finally caught it on film :P
