Adding chicks with chickens.

I have recenly lost 3 of my chickens to a predator and I am looking to replace them. I currently have 4 Buff Orpingtons and 5 Barred Rocks that are all about 9-10 weeks old. Can I add 3 RIR into my flock as chicks? And if so, how do I accomplish this without bullying?

no, one cannot add chicks to a flock without a broody hen. Even with a good aggressive broody hen, the chicks will get some thumps, but without, they may be killed.

I'd wait until the birds are similar in size to reduce problems and give the young pullets a chance defending themselves from the old hens. From our own experience, if the quantity you are introducing is larger than the amount you currently have you can get away with introducing them sooner but you need to keep an eye out and separate them if trouble starts.
