How much protein does a laying hen need? I buy meal worms for my hens but not sure how many are healthy with layer feed and how much is too much? Purina keeps my hens happy, my cat fat, and I sure do miss my fruity freakiest for breakfast!

Well...since most layer feed contains 16% layer feed, I would think that at least 16% of their diet should be protein! Since many chickens are fall molters, and feather regrowth requires protein, many folks bump up the protein in the fall/winter. Of course if your egg production has fallen off, that's due to the short days moreso than inadequate protein (at least if they're receiving commercial layer feed)...
