Just read a flier from a farmer who lets you adopt one of his hens but they stay on the farm. You can even name it. He charges $36 for the twelve dozen eggs over a twelve week period. It's a new wrinkle on CSAs, Community Supported Agriculture.
Small farmers often do that with produce - you pay a set amount ahead of time to them so they have capital to start up in the spring and then you receive a portion of what they produce for the season in weekly allotments. We even have that in Alaska, but this is the first business application I've seen regarding laying hens. Interesting business idea. This man raises his own food and feeds his free-ranging hens extremely well. He loves farming & the photos were wonderful.

What an interesting idea. I would even do it but let them space the 12 dozen eggs out over a longer period of time. Maybe over 6 months. We sell our eggs for $3.50 a dozen at the farmer's market. So that would be about right. Or they could have price point choices. 6 dozen, 12 dozen, 24 dozen. Hmmmmm got my thinking cap on!

we have some of that here in Ohio. The one guy that I have worked with in my job as a conservationist raises lettuce, corn, radishes, etc. year round. He is funded from the locals who 'cost share' like the hen deal. They pick up so much produce each week from him then year round. It's really cool. You never know what you are going to get in your 'produce bag' from week to week.
