Hello everyone. I live in rural east Tennessee. The river is in my front yard and our property line is against the national forest. Born and raised on a farm that has ran chickens, then dairy, now we have beef cattle.

Almost 2 months ago I came home to a grey pearl Guinea on my front porch rocker. The neighbor (Across the river and upstream) that has a variety of birds isn't missing any guineas so this stray bird has adopted me. About a week later I came home from running cattle and fixing fence to find a black hen in my yard. Again, not the neighbor's bird. This weekend I had a muckovy duck come wondering in my yard. I have become the dropping point for wayward and unwanted birds.

As entertaining as my new feathered friends are they are making a mess of my front porch. That being said, I need some sort of shelter for these birds that costs little, they can all use, and easy to keep up. I don't want to invest much in these birds after all they came looking for me. But I do want them taken care of while they are here until if/when they wonder on their merry way. Any ideas anyone can shoot my way would be much appreciated. And if anyone would like a bird or three, let me know. Thanks in advance!!!

How funny I have the same problem as my geese really enjoy my front porch for safety along with the ducks, chickens but the Guinea like to get up high so they enjoy the hangman's gallows at the end of the porch or the stocks just off to the side .... Anyway I normally use the water hose regularly on the front porch or it gets really messy in the winter or smelly in the summer.....

They really just need something to perch on up high for their safety so find a couple of old boards and get them about 7 feet off the ground under some shade or cover .....

Enjoy your new livestock .....

Welcome to BYC!

Putting something up high will probably work for the guinea and the chicken but the duck will need something else. Do you have anything like a wooden box you could lay on the side and fix up some sort of door for it? Or a plastic kids playhouse? I'm not a duck owner so maybe a member that has them will give you better ideas.

Your place must feel safe to the birds for them to find you. Enjoy them while you have them (and keep that garden hose handy, lol).

I'm not too concerned about the duck. It comes and goes to the river at this time. And we're still trying to figure out the pecking order between it and the guinea. Quite comical to watch this big duck amble slowly away while the Guinea acts more like an ol banty and pitch a fit lol.
