For 3 chickens you will need it to be at least 4'x3-4', the bigger the better.

Hens! They are adorable. We will be posting pics when my daughter gets home from work. Thank you so much for the info

You can post some pictures on the Breed or Gender Forum if you are wanting to find out what breed they are.

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you include your general location on your profile, this will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

BYC has a Learning Centre and also Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

Yes, please do share pictures. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

So now we just have to decide who got the better of the arrangement, you or the hens? ;) There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. Old folks like me :old will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!
 
Welcome, the best advice I can give you is this: make your coop and run big enough. Walk in style is preferable. Make it bigger than you think you need. You might even consider future needs. Want to some day have a potting shed? Perhaps a tool shed. Design with that in mind, so if you end up finding out that you really don't want to keep chickens as a "forever thing" you can then repurpose your building.

Coop: You will need at least 4 s.f./bird, 1 linear ft. of perch/ bird. 1 nest box will do for 4 birds. The coop should have natural lighting and be well ventilated, with an area = to 10% of floor space or 1 s.f./bird. The run should have at least 10 s.f./bird. It should be covered to keep hawks out. It should have a skirt to keep digging predators out. Chicken wire will keep chickens in but won't keep predators out. Every single yard is subject to attack by predators. All openings in coop should be covered by 1/2" welded hardware cloth. Your chickens should be shut in the coop every night. Night time is when most predators come out looking for chicken tenders.
