ADOR1 Automatic Coop Door?

Wow! What planet is your Wyoming on that the sun sets in the east?

From the Ador website:

"This remote sensor is just as sensitive to the built-in sensor. Remember that landscape lighting, porch lamps, yard lights and similar light sources, need to be far away or a shield needs to be placed between the light source and the sensor. A little bit of infra-red light can look to ADOR like dim daylight. "

Makes me wonder what happens with this (and any other auto chicken door brand) photo sensor on a clear night. What is the chance that the door will open for the racoons out looking for a snack on a full moon night?? What if someone lives where there is a lot of light pollution?

Bruce
Bruce,
Thanks for mentioning your concerns. I should make a statement about moonlight on my website. Moonlight does not have enough infra-red spectral content for the ADOR1 light sensing to consider it to be daylight. A little bit of infra-red light from nearby artificial lighting can be a problem but I've never gotten a complaint about it. I think if people have seen reaction immediately after installation, then they must have done something to correct the problem. If anybody with an ADOR1 has had a problem with other light sources I would like to know about it. A direct headlight beam can open it and a nearby flashlight directed at it can open it, but my testing indicates most artificial lighting won't be a problem. That is backed up by tens of thousands of field hours of customer experience as well. Because, if it were problematic surely I would be getting emails and phone calls about it. Admittedly, I got a call or two after somebody newly installed the ADOR1 who said it wouldn't close at dark. I asked them to check out possible other light sources, like a yard light right there or maybe landscape lighting close by. I didn't hear back so I think they solved the "mystery" very easily.

You can have yard lights, of course, but possibly an adjustment on distance, or causing a shadow to be cast on the ADOR's eye, is something you might have to do. Even then, I would have thought I would have heard about it if it is a problem at all.

Hi Rod,

Thanks for that explanation. As I read it, lightening came to mind. A sudden bright illumination...could that trigger the Ador1...or any other automatic door for that matter?

Jim,
Thanks for your question. Moonlight, Starlight, Lightning... none of those affect ADOR1. You ask about other brands' susceptibility? I don't know.

The ADOR1 filters sudden changes in light. Lightning is very bright but only for a tiny fraction of a second and would never get through the averaging in ADOR1's software. On the other hand, of course look out for direct hits of lightning in your yard or neighbor's yard... the electromagnetic pulse they create can cause all kinds of bad things to happen to electronics... but the ADOR1 electronics is inside a metal box and is I think quite robust and relatively immune even to that... depends on how close is the "hit".

Thanks for the quick response, Rod. Love your Ador1, and I predict it will rise to be the best selling automatic chicken door in the industry. Would love for you to create a drop ship or affiliate program so I could put it on the new website I am creating.

I ordered my door yesterday. I was having a heck of a time setting up a pay pal account. I didn't know you had to attach a regular bank account, thought you could just use a credit card. Anyway Rod said he is backordered 180+ units due to the lack of motors. 100 motors were supposed to be on the way so that takes care of about half. Soooo being that he said he is averaging 10 new orders a day, it looks like it will be a while for me, but I am going to hope for the best. I was hoping to have it by the first of June.

Well, I'd rather make such inside information announcements myself if I choose to. ...and have to say some numbers stated are not necessarily so accurate. Consider them "heresay". But we do now have regular scheduled delivery of motors coming in and have things staged to catch up as the shipments arrive. Also, rest assured we will continue to work overtime until caught up. Thank you to all who are patiently waiting.

Jim,
Thanks for your prediction. It is a sort of niche market... It is nothing like the pet door industry, for instance. The way I look at it is it is a good beginning for us in the sustainable lifestyle market and we hope to find other needed device markets that make sense to pursue next. But we have plenty to do right now with the ADOR series. As far as "drop ship" and so on, for now I think we will continue to focus on direct marketing. But things are evolving. We aim to improve and expand.

I go out every night to check on the chickens before I go to bed. I have a pretty powerful flashlight and it has never caused the door to open!! Love my door!! Thanks Rod!
Thanks for that note ArkansasChicks! There's nothing better than a user's experience to tell others. Your comment probably sets some people's concerns at ease. Also, I think you could testify that neither lightning, Jupiter, Betelgeus nor the Moon have caused the door to open.

What about porch/yard/landscaping lighting? ... anyone?
