Not quite an emergency, but I need help.

Last night my boyfriend accidentally put the medicated chick starter in with the adult chickens (not realizing). We only just noticed tonight (so about 24 hours with that food). There is about 30 chickens, and they went through about half a 30kg bag (i think).

Our question now is, can we still eat the eggs? If not, how long do we have to wait before we can eat them again? And do you have any suggestions for what to do with the eggs in the meantime (we get about 30 eggs a day, so not a small amount to discard). Can we perhaps give them to pets?

Medicated starter just has amprollium in it—the same as Corid which is used to treat coccidiosis. It is in a very small amount. There is no egg withdrawal for amprollium, and I would not be concerned at all.

Hello there! So i was reading up on what to feed a mix age flock the other day and it said it was better for them all to eat the chick started than the chicks to eat the later feed.

I forget the reason why, maybe too much calcium. So the article suggested if they are all in an area together and you cannot avoid chickens eating each other’s good to go with the younger mix.

I am new to the chicken business though so this is not something i have tried yet, only something i read...for what it’s worth ;-)

thanks everyone! that was what I was hoping - I just remembered that the local feed store had warned not to eat the eggs when I bought a few years back - but perhaps they were just overly cautious. I will call them in the morning just incase, but good to know if the only medication is amprollium we can still have their eggies
