Advantages to keeping roo?

My old roo saved the hens with his life... They will stand up to any intruder... it makes them too easy to catch...

I thought you had to have a roo to get eggs.

Apparently I can get rid of mine if thats not the case.

I agree with gritsar, I don't handle my roosters as babies. I want them to have a healthy respect for me when they grow up and if they're afraid of you as a young'un that will help a lot. If they don't respect you, they consider themselves above you and will fight you for supremecy and you'll have to recover a lot of ground to get back on top. Cuddle the girls to get your chicken fix.

Augustmom, Good luck with keeping your roo. In my first foray into chicken keeping, I hatched 15 (out of 20) eggs, and only 3 ended up being hens! I gave away most of my rooster flock to a friend with a nearby farm as I too live in an urban neighborhood. One remaining rooster we tried to keep as he had a great temperament, kept the hen company, was favored by the children, etc. When he first matured, he crowed only in the morning-it made us smile, and we thought "this will be okay". As the weeks went by, he crowed more and more, until he was crowing all day long. Yesterday, he had to go. Hard on the kids, but I traded him for two new Golden Comets to ease the disappointment. Hope your roo is not so loud as mine!
